Jeremias Adams-Prassl is Professor of Law in the University of Oxford, a Fellow of Magdalen College, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Law, and former Deputy Director of the Institute of European and Comparative Law. He studied law at Oxford and Paris (MA, DPhil) as well as Harvard Law School (LL.M.), and has held visiting positions at institutions including the Max Planck Institute Hamburg, Hong Kong University, Melbourne Law School, Renmin University Beijing, the University of Vienna, and Yale Law School.
Jeremias is the author of Great Debates in EU Law (2021), exploring the evolution of the Union’s legal order. Other recent books, including Humans as a Service (OUP 2018, Paperback 2019), analyses the promise and perils of work in the gig economy across the world. The latter was awarded the 2019 St Petersburg Private Law Prize, and has been translated into multiple languages, including Chinese, French, and Korean. Jeremias’ research on innovation policy and labour market regulation is frequently drawn on by governments and international organisations, including the European Commission, the International Labour Organisation, and the OECD, and has been cited by courts, policy documents, and news organisations in multiple jurisdictions. He has served on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on the New Agenda for Work, Wages, and Job Creation.
Other highly-cited publications include The Concept of the Employer (OUP 2015), and over 150 articles, chapters, and commentaries in leading journals such as the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies, the Modern Law Review, and the Law Quarterly Review. Jeremias is an editor of Chitty on Contracts, the Oxford Encyclopaedia of European Law, and The Contract of Employment (OUP 2016), as well as a number of edited volumes and journals. Jeremias founded the EU Law in the Member States Series (with Advocate General Michal Bobek), exploring the impact of Union law across the Member States. Contributions to that series include The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights in the Member States (2020), Air Passenger Rights, Ten Years On (2016), and Viking, Laval and Beyond (2015). He is currently writing an introduction to EU Labour and Internal Market Law for the Oxford University Press Clarendon Law Series. Together with Professor Abi Adams-Prassl of the Oxford Department of Economics, Jeremias also writes on the law and economics of fragmenting labour markets and access to justice.
His work has been recognised by a number of prizes for teaching, research, and public impact, including the Wedderburn Prize and the Apgar Prize, an Oxford University Teaching Award, a British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award for work on EU employment law, an O2RB Excellence in Impact Award, and an ESRC Outstanding Impact in Public Policy Prize.
Since April 2021, Jeremias has led a five-year, interdisciplinary project exploring the rise of Algorithms at Work, funded by the European Research Council and a 2020 Leverhulme Prize.
